Our hope is that more carmakers will see what Mazda is doing and will follow suit. ![]() You simply get in and drive, because, as Mazda says, "Driving Matters". No one who gets in a Mazda will spend hours of time (or minutes, really) reading the manual. Form does follow function, and the wonderful result is that none of the beauty is lost in the process. Round, highly visible analog gauges, easy, large climate control knobs, and straightforward infotainment interface provide focus for the driver by minimizing the time spent operating the interior or seeing crucial driving data. Nothing in Mazda's vehicle's feels overdone. Mazda designers collaborate richly with the 3D clay modelers to achieve excellent design synergy, one of Mazda's strengths. You're actually hard-pressed to find anything that feels cheap or doesn't look well-made. The infotainment system usability and intuitiveness are just about the best in the car industry, and all materials look and feel wonderful. The seats look handsome and fit the driver well. If you look at every car in their lineup, from the affordable Mazda3, all the way up to the top trim CX-9, no detail is overlooked. This feeling can be evoked by a layout that creates an impression of forward motion or the sense of being enveloped, something like what a pilot would feel when sitting in a cockpit.” Suzuki’s strong devotion to design extends even to details that users would not normally notice. “Mazda makes cars with its focus on the driver,” Suzuki says, “When it comes to the interior design, what we try to do is to figure out what layout would make people feel the urge to drive the car when they sit in the driver’s seat. It has to elicit the desire to drive the vehicle, which is what the Mazda brand is all about. His primary goal isn't just to create a comfortable, usable interior. One of Mazda's interior designers is a young man by the name of Masaya Suzuki. Their cars drive well, look attractive and provide award-winning interiors, as well. Mazda seems to have done all of these just about better than every other manufacturer. Then there are the hurdles of providing both good materials, a high level of fit and finish, while still keeping a good profit margin for the company. Some of the biggest challenges when it comes to interior car design are making the inside look good, function well and provide comfort to its occupants. Not only do they make some of the best-looking, best-driving cars for the money, they've also nailed the styling, functionality, and design of their interiors. It's a cryin' shame that they don't get more sales and recognition in the industry and in automotive circles. But here in our office, we always talk about the Mazda brand. After all, they're German, on the pricier side and meant to exude luxury. When most car buyers think of mainstream automotive brands with nice interiors, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi come to the forefront of their minds.
